In his talk, Jeff will explore the theme of the empowerment of youth. Christi is playing a key role working with youth and adults speaking on video from Congo. Jeff will share his speaking time with Sue Rheem of the Presbyterian Ministry to the UN to discuss:
- The focus of the UN on youth. It’s a big initiative of the Secretary General, who has appointed an Envoy on Youth and SG is setting up an Office on Youth this year.
- Jimmie Hawkins/Advocacy Office looking at potentially PC(USA) youth advocacy conference late 2023.
- Advocacy office has a summer fellows’ program.
The discussion may also include input from a Young Adult Volunteer with the Office of Public Witness.
Jeff Boyd is Regional Liaison for Central Africa and Christi Boyd is Regional Facilitator for Women’s and Children’s Interests.
Larry will speak on Young Women’s Empowerment, sharing new women’s empowerment activities that will be piloted in 2023 to address poverty, food security, and climate change, to help provide a brighter future for tomorrow’s youth in DRC.
Inge Sthreshley will speak on “Scaling Up Nutrition!” She will talk about the challenges and opportunities encountered in implementing nutrition programs in DRC and the strategies which were successful, leading to a 57% reduction in malnutrition in children in three provinces of the DRC.
Larry Sthreshley is country director for IMA World Health in DRC and Inge Sthreshley is is a PCUSA Mission Co-Worker who has been working on the interface between agriculture and nutrition since 1988.
As a new mission co-worker located in Kinshasa, DRC, José will talk about his charge to support teacher training and develop best teaching practices at 15 pilot schools at (8 different sites). He will describe his time getting adjusted to Kinshasa and the individuals with whom he has interacted and come to know. He arrived in Kinshasa April 8, 2022.
José LaMont Jones is the newest Presbyterian Mission Co-worker in DR Congo. He assists the CPK education department in the development, support, and implementation of strategic plans to expand and strengthen the churches’ primary and secondary education programs.
